Chinchilla Links
Below is a list of useful chinchilla-related links that I have compiled. If you know of a good website that I have neglected to place on this list, please send me an e-mail.
My Favorite Chinchilla Sites
The Chinchilla Club This site is an online clubhouse for chinchilla owners, with many useful resources. There are chat rooms, message boards, links to more sites, even an annual online chinchilla show. An excellent source for advice from more experienced chinchilla owners.Silverfall Chinchillas This small breeder hosts an excellent webpage about chinchillas. The genetics link has basic genetics info (so you won't need a college course just to understand breeding). The calculator is REALLY COOL. Check it out!
Chinchilla Sounds Do chinnies actually makes noise? Yes, lots of different ones! This website has some good examples of sounds the chinchillas make, and reasons why they make them. Of course, every chin is unique. Yours may sound different.
ChinWorld An online store that carries everything a chinchilla owner needs, from cages to bath dust, medicines, treats, toys, and even books and chinchilla-theme gifts. In my experience, it's usually cheaper than the petstore, even with shipping. I buy most of my chin stuff through them.
KatieLand Gift Shop Visit my Gift Shop to order cool stuff like t-shirts, mugs, mousepads and more, with pictures of my adorable chinnies on them! If you want your own picture placed on an item, email it to me, and I'll let you know when it's been changed.
Chinchilla Supplies
Cages
Martin's Cages Martin's cages
are all wire with plastic trays, which can be set-in or pull-out. I highly recommend the
pull-out kind because it makes cleaning much easier.
DaMar's Cages In addition to cages,
DaMar's sells a wide variety of other supplies. It is designed for rabbit breeders, but
many of the products would be suitable for chinnies as well.
General
ChinWorld An online store that
carries everything a chinchilla owner needs, from cages to bath dust, medicines, treats,
toys, and even books and chinchilla-theme gifts. In my experience, it's usually cheaper than
the petstore, even with shipping. I buy most of my chin stuff through them.
Alfalfa King Their hay is very good quality, at
reasonable prices. The pellets, however, are made for rabbits, not chinnies. They don't
carry any other supplies.
Lone Star Chinchilla They have all sorts of
chinchilla supplies, from feed and hay, to wheels, treats and toys. They also have Joy of
Chinchillas for sale.
The Ferret Store They carry everything, but their
prices are quite high. Frankly, with shipping added in, you're better off just going to
Petsmart.
Chin Lovers' HavenThis site sells
handmade chinchilla toys. There are hanging chew toys and willow branches, in a variety of
sizes. Prices are very good, and include shipping. Highly recommended.
American Pet Diner They carry hay and pellets.
No other supplies. The site is kind of hard to navigate.
More Chinchilla Sites
Sir Chin Links-a-Lot This site has links to many of the best chinchilla websites, organized by topic. A great place to start browsing the web for chinchilla information.
Care of
Chinchillas An excellent article in Chinchilla Community Quarterly, the online magazine
produced by the Chinchilla Club. It gives a pretty comprehensive review of basic care
needs.
National Chinchilla
Society (UK) Ever wonder what judges look for in a chinchilla show? This website has
details of chinchilla quality judging, including body proportions, fur color and quality,
etc.
Punnett
Squares For those not familiar with genetics, a punnett square takes the genes each
parent carries and crosses them to determine all the possible combinations and the
likelihood of each. This website lets you choose the color of each parent and will generate
the Punnett square and percentages for you.
Pacific
Northwest Chinchillas Although the site owners are retiring from chinchilla breeding,
their website is a good source of information. They have a very good set of pictures of the
various chinchilla colors.
Caitlin's
Chinchillas This is a link to a page full of book reviews by a chinchilla owner. The
really cool thing is, there are links to the amazon.com pages for each book, so you can buy
it right away!
Veterinary Partner.com This
site has veterinary information about all sorts of pets. It's pretty user-friendly. The
amount of chinchilla info is limited, though.
California Chins This site was created
by some of the most well-respected chinchilla ranchers in the US. Their book, The Joy of
Chinchillas, is highly recommended. You can order it from this site for 20 dollars + 5
dollars shipping.
Chinchilla Breeders Online A site for
professional chinchilla breeders. There is a chinchilla breeders directory, which may help
you locate a breeder near you.
